CartMagician platform

The CartMagician platform allows you to create augmented reality content for websites, in particular e-commerce sites. It automates the process of converting 2D imagery into 3D and AR files that you can copy and paste directly onto your website or online store. Customers then view these as in-browser based WebAR.

CartMagician specialises in developing AR product visualisation and WebAR conversion tools and plugins that make it easy to use augmented reality for online shopping.

We help e-commerce store owners, product managers and online business owners engage more customers and increase sales through immersive, virtual showrooms where their visitors can view products in their own environment any time, and anywhere.

CartMagician is a cloud-based platform that takes any pre-rendered 3D file or 2D image and applies it to high quality, hyper-realistic 3D environments called templates. Our wide range of templates includes artwork frames in many different finishes, multiple flooring types, walls, rugs, cushions, everyday retail products and more. The result is WebAR ready USDZ and/or GLB files that can be uploaded directly to your website or eCommerce store.

Because CartMagician uses WebAR, customers don’t need to download an app to view the product in augmented reality – they just open the browser on their device and view. Read more about WebAR.

Creating and viewing GLB & USDZ files

Yes. CartMagician’s AR converter allows you to create both USDZ and GLB files from 2D image files you already have in JPEG or PNG format.

The CartMagician 2D to 3D AR conversion tool is great if you sell 2D products such as artwork, photography, floor coverings like rugs, or other designs that require 2D visuals like t-shirts, soft coverings and wallpaper.

CartMagician also helps customers who already have 3D models of their products convert the 3D file into USDZ and GLB file formats.

Size always matters when it comes to 3D design, especially if you intend for them to be viewed on mobile devices.

When it comes to WebAR file size limits 18-20MB should be your cap however, 5-10MB is actually a better limit for an experience to run smoothly in a mobile browser on most devices with a decent internet connection.

The file size of a 3D AR experience is generally the sum of the number of polygons, and the materials and textures used, and the length and complexity of any animations (when used), which all translates to the quality of the image and how realistic the objects appear.

Knowing your limits will have a significant effect on what you can and cannot do in terms of reaching your goal.

Working with GLB files

GLB is a 3D file format that's used in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), games, and web applications on Android devices because it supports motion and animation. Another advantage of the format is its small size and fast load times.

Interactive websites, eCommerce stores and ads use the GLB format to display objects that users can interact with (like a couch that they can rotate and view from any angle).

CartMagician exports GLB files so that they can be viewed online in 3D and in augmented reality on Android devices. This is particularly helpful if you have an online store and would like your customers to view your products in their own surroundings while shopping online.

CartMagician exports GLB files to a growing list of Android devices. For a full list of the growing number of supported ARCore devices please visit: https://developers.google.com/ar/discover/supported-devices

Yes, you can. You can include animations in your GLB file ready to be viewed on the mobile web.

Yes, you can. CartMagician exports GLB files in several ways. You can export the file as an iFrame and view an interactive 3D preview on your web page. You can also view the 3D preview when viewing on an Android mobile device in 3D AR mode.

Working with USDZ files

A USDZ file is a web-based 3D AR file format which is viewable as AR content on a website when you click on it while browsing the web or shopping online using an iOS device. Created by Pixar, USDZ is a rich format that can display vivid and detailed objects as well as animations.

Built-in apps, such as Safari, Messages, Mail, News, and Notes, use AR Quick Look to display USDZ files of virtual objects in 3D or AR on iPhone and iPad.

What’s great about USDZ is that you can export USDZ straight out of CartMagician and view directly into Safari and Chrome web browsers on all new Apple devices with iOS 12+ and beyond.

Yes, you can. You can include animations in your USDZ file ready to be viewed on the mobile web. This is great for highlighting product features, displaying installation prompts, or creating a memorable AR experience ready to share.

AR requires an iOS or iPadOS device with iOS 12+ or later or iPadOS, and an A9 chip or later.

AR Quick Look gives you instant access to AR experiences straight from Safari, Messages and Mail. You can preview an item in your own space and experience it in AR before you make a purchase from a website.

Using AR templates

AR Templates are 3D models of common items – picture frames, art canvas, wallpaper, rugs, t-shirts, cushions – that house your 2D image, bringing it to life for your customers.

AR Templates eliminate repetitive, time-consuming 3D modelling tasks by allowing you to apply the same 3D model to unlimited product designs without re-constructing the design each time.

One AR template can be used for your entire product range so you can replicate and grow your 3D augmented reality product library fast. Plus, using the same template keeps your brand’s look and feel consistent across your website.

Absolutely. CartMagician’s automation takes care of resizing, applying the new design, converting and outputting perfectly optimised AR files.

This means a single AR template can be transformed into unlimited SKU variants in a matter of seconds without the need of individual 3D editing to create each SKU item. Learn about AR Templates

Yes, you can. CartMagician offers a customisation service so that you can have templates created to suit your products. Simply supply us with a reference to your preferred design or frame style and CartMagician will create a life-like replica for you. Once created, we will add this template to your 3D template library.

The result will be tailored to your business or gallery needs so your customers will have a true sense of what they are purchasing when they buy one of your amazing products online.

Yes. CartMagician charges a fixed price of $290 each for one-off custom templates. Bulk orders benefit from reduced rates according to order size.

This fee allows our team to create a hyper-realistic 3D model for you and then configure it into the conversion platform where the magic happens.

Converting 2D files

You can use any JPEG or PNG image that you’d like to turn into a WebAR file.

The maximum upload file size for JPEG or PNG images is 4Mb uncompressed.

As a guide we recommend the longest edge of your image be 1000-1500 pixels in length.

Yes, definitely. Please crop your image to size and to ratio before uploading.

If you are photographing your artworks or using your existing online images, please crop and remove any excess detail including backgrounds or drop shadows if used.

There are a number of online tools that will help you remove the white background on images including image editing applications such as Photoshop. Once the background has been removed you can then save the image as a PNG file with transparent background.

Upload the PNG into the 2D converter then use either the decal, tattoo or t-shirt template to convert your file and view the design.

Yes. We recommend using PNG files for any designs that require no backgrounds. For example logos, tattoos or vehicle decals.

Absolutely. From the 2D converter page select the Dropbox icon and follow the on screen steps to connect Dropbox to your CartMagician account.

Absolutely. From the 2D converter page select the Google Drive icon and follow the on screen steps to connect your Google Drive account to your CartMagician account.

Converting 3D files

CartMagician accepts all standard 3D formats including OBJ, FBX, GLB, GLTF, STL, ABC and DAE.

Yes. Please make sure that you have baked your textures and materials into your model prior to uploading.

Using your 3D application of choice, save your GLTF file and assets into a single folder. Make sure that they remain linked to your 3D model, then drag and drop it onto the CartMagician 3D converter.

The maximum file size limit for upload is currently set to 16Mb. CartMagician recommends keeping your files as small as possible when viewing on the web. This helps reduce loading times.

Yes. Make sure that materials and textures are baked so that they remain linked to your 3D model, then drag and drop onto the CartMagician 3D converter.

Here’s a couple of quick tips to reduce model file sizes to better optimize your AR viewing experience.

• Use smaller image textures. These can be saved down to 1024 x 1024px, often with no loss of image quality to the final render. Save a JPEG where possible.

• Simplify meshes (remove polygons). The more vertices you have in camera, the more time it takes to render.

• Remove doubles or use the decimator mesh edit feature.

• Remove subdivision surface and multiresolution modifiers.

We recommend swapping the 4K textures to 2K or lower to instantly bring down the file size. This will help optimise your files and ultimately provide a much better AR experience when viewed on the mobile web without losing quality.

Our team uses 3DS Max which is good for optimizing and baking textures and then exporting into CartMagician.

glTF minimizes both the size of 3D assets, and the runtime processing needed to unpack and use those assets. glTF defines an extensible, common publishing format for 3D content tools and services that streamlines authoring workflows and enables interoperable use of content across the industry.

Troubleshooting

Please ensure that you have connected your Website to CartMagician to enable the WebAR functionality. Log in to cartmagician.com then under settings select ‘Connect your website’

Follow this link to Connect WebAR your Website

This is a common problem with some 3D modelling applications including SolidWorks and Keyshot. The same misalignment problem can also occur when you place files in Blender, Unity or Unreal.

There is an easy fix (well documented online) – simply select the components of your model and reset all transforms to ‘0’. Start with the components that are misaligned. Once this is done you can also reset the world origin ‘0’ so that your model is centered when viewed. This will correct the positioning and make sure that your components are not misaligned when converting in CartMagician.
